Clean Slate event was held on March 26 at the Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Richmond, and it was a great success! Judge Diana Becton approached the Public Defender’s office about holding an expungement event in honor of Easter. The Public Defender in turn approached us to collaborate, and we worked with Rubicon Legal, Bay Legal, the DA’s office, the Reentry Coordinator, and many criminal clerks from the court to pull the event together.
We estimate that almost 500 people attended the event on Saturday. In the morning, Judge Becton convened court and granted expugements for 78 people, including at least a dozen Center Members! In the afternoon, she held Traffic Court and dismissed outstanding fines and fees for close to 200 people. For those who did not sign up to get on the calendar in time, attorneys from the Public Defender, Rubicon and Bay Legal were available for consultations, to answer questions, and help people get the expungement process started. The University of California police once again volunteered their services to provide on-site Live Scan services for people to get free RAP sheets, and over 100 people were Live Scanned.
